The Municipality achieves the VÉLOSYMPATHIQUE silver-level certification!

September 18, 2024

The Municipality of Chelsea is proud to announce that it has recently obtained the Silver-level “VÉLOSYMPATIQUE” certification. This certification highlights the ongoing efforts of the Municipality and the community to promote cycling and create a healthy, pleasant and safe environment for all.

“We are very pleased to receive this certification,” said Pierre Guénard, Mayor of Chelsea. “This recognition is tangible proof of our commitment to promoting active transportation and making Chelsea a greener and more dynamic Municipality.”

Among the initiatives implemented by the Municipality since 2020, when it received the Bronze-level certification, are:

  • Progress in terms of planning:
    • Update of the active transportation master plan in 2021;
    • Sustainable mobility advisory committee;
    • Pillar on sustainable mobility in the strategic plan;
    • Planning in connection with the sustainable development plan.
  • Improved management of the cycling network in winter:
    • The Voie Verte is accessible to winter bikes as it is now groomed;
    • Purchase of the necessary equipment for sweeping the on-street and on-site cycling network;
    • The cleaning schedule has been developed to allow the opening of bike paths earlier in the season.
  • A greater diversification of cycling education activities and cycling events.
  • Great mobilization of the community to develop a cycling culture.

"This certification is a significant milestone, but we don't plan on stopping there," added Pierre Guénard. "We will continue to work on improving cycling infrastructure and promoting the use of bicycles as a mode of transportation."

"As a recipient of a Silver-level certification, Chelsea continues its impressive progress within the certification program. A true example for a community of its size, Chelsea stands out for the winter maintenance of its cycling network, its vibrant sustainable mobility advisory committee, and the diversity of cycling activities concentrated there. With a focus on the quality of life of its population and the attractiveness of its territory, we know that Chelsea will continue to inspire and raise its standards in terms of active mobility." - Jean-François Rheault, président-directeur général de Vélo Québec.
