Waste collection

As of February 4, 2025, a truck equipped with a mechanized arm will collect residual materials (waste, recycling and compost).

This change will result in adjustments for residents, who must respect certain instructions and modify their habits.

Accepted

  • 120, 240 or 360-litre European plug-in wheeled bins
    • Permitted bin colours: gray, black or green
  • Both wheels must be on the axle.

Refused

  • Bins that do not meet the standards listed above
  • Leaf bags (unless a special collection during the weeks indicated in the collection calendar)
  • Excess garbage next to bins
  • Any item exceeding the authorized limit per collection.

If your bin is damaged, please contact the Public Works Department at 819 827-1160 or by e-mail at travaux.publics@chelsea.ca. An employee will come to your home and repair it free of charge.

Additional, compliant bins can be used for excess waste. Single-family homes can put out:

  • Two 360-litre bins per collection until April 29 and after October 4 (monthly collection frequency)
  • One 360-litre bin per collection from April 29 to October 3 (twice-monthly collection frequency).

For other dwellings and businesses, please contact Public Works at 819 827-1160 to find out your bin limit.

Please note that additional bins can be ordered from the Town Hall reception desk. Bins are delivered on Thursdays or Fridays, while supplies last. Residents are responsible for their own costs.

Position your bins correctly!

Make sure your bins are positioned correctly at the curb for efficient collection:

a. Lid closed, clear and unattached

b. No obstacles around the bins

c. Distance of at least 1 meter between bins

d. Wheels positioned towards the residence.

What is a final household waste?

Final waste is residue that cannot be recycled, reused, or composted and is therefore destined for the landfill. This is waste that ends up in the green bin, for example:

  • Chewing gum
  • Cigarette butts and ashes
  • Disposable sweeping cloths (e.g. Swiffer® pads)
  • Fabric softener sheets (e.g. Bounce®)
  • Flexible plastic tubes (tooth paste, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Incandescent bulbs
  • Litter and animal excrement
  • Number 6 (♸) plastic items and containers that are not identified by the Mobius loop
  • Metallic packaging (chip bags, granola bar packaging)
  • Personal hygiene products
  • Plastic straws
  • Styrofoam
  • Vacuum bags and their contents
  • Waxed food paper
